Swiss guitarist Francesco Diomaiuta has been pursuing a path in the world of jazz improvisation that is too often less followed.
Avoiding the cliché of free jazz and embracing the deep traditional roots of tonal jazz organization puts Diomaiuta in the footsteps of guitarists who have developed singular voices in the last 30 years of guitar and who can be easily mentioned with one word names: Frisell, Torn, Abercrombie, Rypdal among others.
That he is still in his early 20s does not diminish his talent for he has intensely studied his instrument and the effect it has had on the music and film industry. Since 2012 his sound has exploded with the use of loops and real-time lyrical effects to search beyond linear improvisation and has entered the world of sound design.
Chemistry is everything and Francesco’s partner in jazz crime is New York drummer Chris Massey who spent many years playing with many of the same ground-breaking guitar artists in the 1980’s. Both Bill Frisell and David Torn were highly influential players in Chris Massey’s development in NYC as a musician through touring and studio work, as well as his recordings with bassist Steve Swallow. He also toured for many years with blues guitarist Chris Duarte. He is a drummer who can both support and lead using delicate shadings and hears drumming in a melodic way based on an ‘abstract wide beat’ of playing groove influenced by Roy Haynes, Jon Christensen, Paul Motian and Bob Moses.
Together Diomaiuta and Massey create shifting polyrthymic shapes with broad brushstrokes that conjure wide cinematic landscapes and open vistas, but still remaining sensitive to the true jazz vocabulary.
